Oh the dirty business of washing feet

Okay, so everyone is in an uproar about Pope Francis washing the feet of women.  What are we to think about all of this?

Well, for one thing, we can spend a lot of time debating this and miss the point of the ritual altogether.

We know that this act represents the humility of Christ and is a model of service.

So, maybe we need to ask the question . . .

Was he modeling this for the purpose of imitation?  And if he was, are we to assume that only those getting their feet washed were being called to do this?

If so, may we assume then, that Christian women and children do not need to humbly serve others?

This was not an ordination.  This was a model for his church.  A church that gets down on bended knee and serves. It is what we all do.  Each and every one of us.

The world is watching.  The greater message we want to get across to others is humility and service.  This will be lost if we spend all of our time debating the ritual itself.

God bless,
Janet
