Big block of cheese

I don't really like cucumbers and when we go to the store, we buy skim milk. I'm not really big into peppers either.

I mention this because it occurred to me while I was watching one of the reports on food being passed out at food distribution centers, that the dignity of being able to choose what you want isn't always an option.

This is NOT a slam on food distribution. Having people pick and choose would probably be unsustainable.

But when the report showed cucumbers and peppers being handed out, and since I don't really like them, I started wondering what I would do with them if I were receiving them.

Kudos to the distribution places that can hand out fresh vegetables. I was told one time, locally, that many people who are food insecure often do not know how to prepare fresh vegetables since it is something they don't often have. The little tour I was taking included a big kitchen where people could learn how to prepare fresh veggies.

It is easy to say if you are hungry enough you will eat whatever you get, but I don't think it is as easy as that. I knew an elderly person years ago that was getting food help, and she was regularly given a huge block of cheese, which was definitely not good for her state of health, even though she was appreciative.

Here's my point.

Being able to support one's family, and being able to make healthy choices for them, speaks to the dignity of the human person.

Catholic Social Teaching is very clear that when we share what we have with others, it is not about our generosity, but about leveling the playing field by giving others what they are entitled to.

The people of this country have really come together to find ways to help those in need, and I couldn't be more proud of my fellow Americans--both those staffing the food centers and those who have to use them. Being on the receiving end surely cannot be easy.

It is clear, that everyone should have food. It's just a basic thing.

Thank you to everyone who is working so hard to feed our brothers and sisters during this time of need. You are greatly appreciated. Please continue to show them the respect they deserve.
