On this Ash Wednesday, at the beginning of Lent, you will
surely be inundated with information.
Why do we pray, fast and give alms?
What’s up with the ashes? How
does giving up candy translate into a spiritual act and what, for crying out
loud does any of this have to do with Jesus?
We will talk about all of these things next Monday, March
11, 2019 so I hope you will join me at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Burton
at 6:30 p.m. for my Lenten talk (We will meet in their Family Life Center.)
Bring a friend or your group!
But, before we get there, I just want to point out a couple
of things. These forty days of Lent use
prayer, fasting and almsgiving as tools that aid us in growing closer to God,
discovering the power of spiritual acts and self-sacrifice and help us to grow
interiorly as we strive to look outwardly.
These are not something the Church invented, but are founded
on the model given to us in the life of Jesus.
Together, they form a practice that reveals the beauty and life of discipleship.
As you consider these days of penitence and how you will
open yourself to all that is possible, I believe you will find that an in-depth
look at these traditions will be helpful.
Understanding why we do things is so important!
I look forward to seeing you on March 11th as we
begin this journey to Easter together.
God bless,
Janet Cassidy
