Do you have mountains in your life?

Today we celebrate the beautiful Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Matthew 17:1 +) when Jesus took Peter, James and John up a high mountain and they witnessed his transfiguration.  Scripture tells us his “face shone like the sun” and “his clothes became white as light.”

Just imagine yourself on that mountain, seeing what they saw.  Jesus was also joined on the mountain by Moses and Elijah—the giver of the law and a great prophet.  Their appearance is no small event.  God the Father spoke, telling Peter, James and John that Jesus is his beloved Son and that they should listen to him.

His divinity was confirmed for them on that glorious day.  The three apostles were so moved by all of this that they simply fell prostrate.  What else could you do after witnessing such a sight?

It reminds me of another passage from Psalm 97.

In the first few verses we learn that fire goes before the Lord; lightning illumines the world; the earth sees and trembles.  The Lord is king and the earth should rejoice.

And then my favorite—“The mountains melt like wax before the Lord.”

For me, when I read about mountains melting like wax, I like to imagine the mountains as being the obstacles we have in life.  I am lifted up with hope at the image of them all disappearing, melting away.  The power of the Lord is that great; our hope is in him.

Clearly, as seen in the transfiguration, there is much more going on than most of us can see with our human sight.  This account reveals this reality.

Learning about the transfiguration brings unlimited hope to each of us that whatever we might be facing today, it can be become something greater, something more beautiful than we can ever imagine—if we follow Jesus up that mountain.

May God bring peace to your troubles and hope in the power of the Lord.
