Bellies Stuffed, They Wanted More

(My apologies to my subscribers if you have been receiving the same blog twice.  I am working to resolve the problem, which I am hoping I have accomplished with this issue.  If not, rest assured, I will stay on it!  Thank you for your patience!)

In Psalm 78 we read about the manna (bread) that God rained down from heaven for the struggling Israelites in the desert.

Verses 29-30 say, in part:

"They ate and were well filled; he gave them what they had craved.  But while they still wanted more, and the food was still in their mouths . . ."

While the food was still in their mouth, they were not satisfied!  Their bellies were stuffed because God provided what they wanted, but in their eyes, it was still not enough.

Look around.  God provides such beauty for us in this world.  Even in our most difficult times, he is there to comfort and sustain us.  How many of us, in the midst of all his blessings, continue to cry out, "More! More! We want more!"?

Apparently, according to Psalm 78, God was not too happy about the Israelite's response to his help, and in his anger he attacked the grumblers, killing their best warriors.  Now they were in a real pickle.

Now they would change their ways, right?

For sure they would finally "get" it.

Wrong.

"In spite of all this they went on sinning, they did not believe in his wonders."

If we do not know what God has done for us, or if we quit believing in him altogether, we will continue to feverishly sin against him as if it doesn't matter.

He imparted justice on the Israelites; but he didn't stop there.

The good news is that when "the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a warrior from the effects of wine" (65) he was merciful to his people and rose up David who shepherded God's people "with a pure heart."

Even when we reject God in our free will, he continues to pour out his love and mercy on us, providing what we really need, which is not always the same as what we want.

Thank God for something today, and move forward in gratitude.  He will never leave you.
