It's
been a rough softball season for our son, and others as well, as it
seems like every time he is scheduled to practice, there are either
Canadian smoke issues or rain. Since
he is quite the weather enthusiast, he watches it closely to see if it
is going to impact his practices or game.
As
we get drawn into it with him, we keep talking about how the weather
changes from hour to hour (sometimes minute to minute.) For one
practice, we headed out under questionable, but sunny, skies. Before we
got to practice ten minutes away from home, we were in the midst of a
pounding hail storm!
In
the Gospel of Matthew (16:1-3) Jesus is being tested by two well-known
groups. The Pharisees (legal experts who believed in the resurrection)
and the Sadducees (more political, who did not believe in the
resurrection).
They wanted Jesus to show them a sign from heaven.
He
responded by asking how it is that they cannot judge the signs of the
times, but when they look at the sky they can judge by its color whether
or not it is going to storm.
Should the signs of the times be as obvious to us as the weather? If that is the case, how are we not reading them?
Perhaps
we are not looking at the bigger picture of what is going on in our
culture. Perhaps we are more micro-focused on ourselves and what is
right in front of us.
I
consistently pray for our country, government, elections and the
morality of the people (that means all of us.) When we look at the big
picture, it can be very disheartening.
Can
we even fathom the long-term, generational impact our lack of morality
will have? Yes, we should, because we are already seeing it in the
violence around us, the gender identity struggles, the mental health
problems, false narratives, and the breakdown of the family unit and its
unhealthy impact on children.
The
list goes on and on, and it will continue to, as long as we do not live
our faith and put other things before God. The "golden calf" idols we
have created that totally encapsulate our desires and increase our
temptations, are right now, today, causing us problems.
But
it doesn't have to be that way. We can transform our society. We know
that God is victorious and saves his people. But we, his people, need
to make him the hub in the wheel of our life.
Let's
not give up. Let's keep plugging away, hoping in the possibility of a
reformed country, where God is welcomed into our lives. We may be in a
rainy season in this country, but the bright light of the Son will
prevail.
