On Ash Wednesday there was a line from a reading from 2 Corinthians (5:20-6:2) that hits at the heart of our responsibility as a Christian.
Paul tells us that WE are "ambassadors for Christ."
Wow! Think about that. YOU are an ambassador. YOU represent Christ in the world! If that doesn't influence how you are in this world, I don't know what will.
Paul tells us that, so significant is our role, that it is "as if God were appealing through us."
This reminds me of the famous quote from St. Teresa of Avila:
Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.
Paul continues urging us:
"We implore you on behalf of Christ,
be reconciled to God."
We must be close to God if we are his ambassadors. We must follow his ways. We must be "all in."
Do you accept your role as an Ambassador for Christ?
How will knowing this change the way you operate in this world?
YOU are his body, his hands and feet on earth. That is something we should not take lightly.
