Can "Nature" be the Architect?

Deeper Well - Musgraves

My accidental introduction to Kacey Musgraves was her 2013 pro-LGBTQ+ song, "Follow your Arrow." After watching some of her other videos and interviews, I must say she is quite a free spirit.

Throughout the Arrow song, she sort of encourages people to do whatever they want, without limits, rationalizing that you might as well, because people are always going to criticize you anyway.

The truth is, while it may be fun and inventive to create music without boundaries, that philosophy doesn't transfer quite so well in life.

If we start down a border-less path, doing whatever we FEEL like, that's not so good for us long-term.

Musgraves has a beautiful voice, and is very creative, so it's no wonder she's won eight Grammys, but I had no idea who she was, so I did a little digging.

I always wonder about the faith of someone who thinks like this, and as I researched her more, it turns out she has many questions. You can see this in her song "The Architect," which came out in 2024 on her album, "Deeper Well."

Here's an edited excerpt:

"I don't understand, are there blueprints or plans?
Can I speak to the architect?"

"Does it happen by chance? Is it all happenstance?Do we have any say in this mess?Is [it] too late to make some more space? Can I speak to the architect?
This life that we make, is it random or fate? Can I speak to the architect? Is there an architect?"

I think this song reflects her journey over the years, and it is clear that she has a long way to go.

I read online that she's stated that "nature is her God, and she looks to it for guidance and answers." Apparently, she considers herself "in tune with the cosmic flow, listening to nature's laws, and trusting that nature has her back," according to an online source.

How sad is that?

While we may be able to discover God through the nature he created, nature itself cannot be the architect (God). Nature is no replacement for our loving and merciful God.

This sort of thinking reveals the thoughts of someone who has not yet discovered God, so, needing a substitute, they have created a replacement for him, i.e. nature.

Hopefully, if you have gotten caught up in this thinking, you will eventually land on the reality that God exists, and the greatest freedom of all is living within the boundaries of his love.
