Frustrated on the bacon aisle

My husband and I stopped in the grocery store to pick up a few things and I saw a sale sign over some bacon. I thought it was confusing, so I asked the butcher how much the bacon actually cost.

Determining the price of the bacon turned out to be more difficult than you might think.

The butcher explained:

The red sale sign is the sale price everybody gets ($5.99.)

The blue sale sign indicates that if I am a "perks" customer, I can get an extra $1.00 off the sale price if I go into my online account and clip the coupon.

Clipping the coupon meant I first had to find it in the app. It was buried in the weekly ad, where I had to click on a tiny, little button to add it to my customer perks. (I've never seen that button before. What have I been missing?)

After ALL THAT, the butcher said we might want to ask customer service to be sure we did it right, because he wasn't real good with this stuff (although he was very nice and helpful.)

When we went to the checkout, the bacon came up at $6.99 (the normal price). Then we noticed the $1.00 off for the sale price everybody gets. But after that, our special value, coupon-clipped price didn't show up.

So, we asked a checkout lady what the problem was and she fixed it. We finally got our extra special discount.

Here's our complaint.

Why can't everyone just get a good sale price?

We don't think it is fair that just because we are able to sign up online for the app, that other people who can't do that, can't get the special sale.

It's a justice thing, really. It isn't fair to elderly customers who may not even have a smart phone. It's not fair to people with cognitive disabilities who may not understand the complicated process. What about people with vision problems? (The button in that ad was seriously tiny.)

It's like you are being punished if you don't have the necessary phone, understand the process, or just don't want to sign up to be a store's special customer.

Think about it. Those who could most benefit from a special sale price most likely cannot navigate the system.

If I hadn't asked for help, we never would have gotten the deal.

If you, Mr. Grocery Store CEO are reading this, please understand that I don't need to be set apart as special to get a better discount than the next guy.

Just give us a fair price--all of us--and do away with this ridiculous pricing scheme.

Like my husband and I talked about, anyone in your store--special customer or not--is buying stuff from you, so you should appreciate that and give everyone the same sale price.

Can I get an AMEN?
