Have you caught John Krasinski’s SGN videos online? One of the stars of the show “The Office” decided
we need Some Good News so he started
making funny videos that only report the good things happening around the
globe.
And speaking of the globe, he begins each episode by
spinning a small globe. As he began his
latest episode, he started joking about how people were being so mean to him
online. Apparently some careful viewers
realized he was spinning his little globe backwards!
I always find it amazing when people notice things like
this. I’ve watched several episodes of
his show, and not once did it occur to me that the globe was being spun
backwards. Admittedly, I’m not sure I
would have even realized that was the case, even if I had been paying that
close of attention.
On Krasinski’s SGN show, he recently took the bad news that
kids are not having proms and decided to put on a virtual prom for them. He also gives uplifting reports of people
doing good, recovering from cancer or just making the best of our current
situation. Sometimes he even has other
celebrities check in, including a past “co-worker” from The Office, which is a
real treat.
I like the idea that he is giving us Some Good News because heaven knows we get enough of the bad
stuff. He offers a healthy dose of
lighthearted fun to balance the heaviness.
I have been so impressed with the creativity people are
showing during this crisis. From
teachers who are finding interesting ways to reach and teach their students, to
various ways of raising money for charities, or even food drives for truck
drivers (because so many places are closed, they can drive endless miles
without being able to find a place to stop or buy snacks) people are in motion.
Our priests and ministers are also finding interesting ways
to keep us connected, healthy, and spiritually fed. There are multiple places we can go to join a
priest offering the Liturgy of the Hours, lay parishioners offering the rosary,
or even, especially, the online streaming of Masses.
All of these opportunities help us punctuate our endless
days with moments that help us grow spiritually—if we take advantage of
them. I often speak about the necessity
of us being open to these occasions that invite the Holy Spirit to come into
our lives, to increase our faith, and to strengthen our resolve.
If you are having a difficult time, I encourage you—especially
if you have never done this before—to check out the various resources online
that will inspire and uplift you, motivate and move you on your journey of
faith.
For those of you who already have a few favorite resources, would you please post one or two of them here so others can enjoy them as well?
Thank you!
